There’s no question that everyone appreciates a bit of portability. It makes it so that you have far less to carry around and it’s less of a heavy load. Of course sometimes it gets to the point that it’s just a little too portable. Yes, it’s more convenient, but if it makes it more difficult to use, then it kind of defeats the purpose. This mouse is one of those items that might just be a hair too small for some people. However, if you have tiny hands, then perhaps this mouse is a dream come true.

Kids already have the option to own little miniature cars to ride in with batteries that run for about 20 minutes before they die. They also have electronic scooters and other various items to ride on. Well now kids can own their own kid size version of a Segway, only for them it’s called a Dareway. There is a version for both boys and girls, and it will move them around just like your average Segway. Although I imagine this one is not quite as well built.

Panasonic has finally announced the pricing of its new Micro Four Thirds digital camera, the LUMIX DMC-GH1, where it will hit retail stores sometime early this June for a rather expensive $1,499.95. Well, at that price point, you not only get full High Definition video recording capability, you will also benefit from the inclusion of the LUMIX G VARIO 14-140mm/F4.0-5.8 ASPH/MEGA O.I.S. lens as part of the kit. This new lens will boast a silent motor and continuous auto focusing (AF) capability, making it fundamentally different from standard DSLRs.

PXP-900: Looks like a PSP, plays like the old school

The PXP-900 is clearly designed to look like something else. See if you can figure it out. If you’re stuck, just look to the triangle, circle, square, and X keys on the right.

Yeah, this PXP-900 is no Sony Playstation PSP, but you would probably never know it until you tried to play it. For instead of the latest from PlayStation Portable, a user would get some old school game like Pole Position.

Yes, it appears this guy can only do Roms such as those from NES, Famicom, Super Famicom, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and SEGA MegaDrive. Granted, I’m not certain of the morality of Roms, because I’ve heard that downloading them can be hazardous to your legal health.

So who is the PXP-900 for? Perhaps for people like me, who remember the days of early eighties/nineties video games with a love. Someone who knows that the video games they put out now are nothing compared with the addictive ones put out back then.

If you are old enough to remember the video games of that bygone era, then you might have a kid who is begging you for a PSP. Something tells me that you can probably pick up the PXP-900 for a cheaper price. Your kid will probably be disappointed, but he or she might come to like older games. It’s a bonding experience waiting to happen!

Happy Birthday, Steve Jobs

Since I’m not one of Steve Jobs’ Facebook friends, I must rely on the accuracy of the Internet for his biographical information: that Tuesday is the Apple CEO’s birthday. He is 54 years old.

Happy Birthday! I know that the entire Mac community hopes that we will celebrate many more of them.

For newcomers to the Mac and the growing list of Apple hardware and software platforms, I would offer a brief recollection of Steve Jobs about 10 years ago. I saw him in the lobby of a large San Francisco hotel in the afternoon following his 1999 Macworld Expo keynote address.

He was seated on a bench near some elevators, perhaps waiting for housekeeping to finish cleaning Apple’s suite in the floors above. He was sitting alone and glowering, broadcasting a radioactive aura that looked ready to explode. Around him, standing well away from him in small groups, were his retinue of PR handlers and executives, all facing anywhere but towards Jobs.

Jobs must have thought that he should be talking to someone. But it seemed that all the king’s flacks couldn’t dig up an interview on that afternoon.

My thought at the time was that nobody — analysts, press and customers alike — was coming around to the idea of thinking differently (okay, “different”) about the Macintosh, Apple or Steve Jobs himself. The campaign got going in 1998 and was in high swing at the Expo, which had many black-and-white banners several stories high hanging around the hall and in the Apple booth.

It wasn’t that Apple wasn’t trying. That week in his keynote address, Jobs introduced powerful new Macs and software. Its Power Mac G3 was the first with the code-name “Stumpy” minitower enclosure. The model provided a side-panel door that opened to give easy access to all the components inside. You didn’t have to get out a screwdriver to open it up. It was a brilliant design, best in the industry, that was used for many years afterwards.

In addition, I remember that this was the machine that replaced SCSI with FireWire. It was a big step for usability and performance.

Jobs said iMac was selling well and about 10 percent of the sales were to former PC users. He said that 32 percent of iMac buyers were first-time computer users.

Along with the hardware was the announcement of Mac OS X Server, that would be based on NeXT’s BSD Unix kernel. It was the first Apple product with a NeXT heritage.

Apple was on its fifth consecutive profitable quarter, which had come following several reorganizations and the loss of many product groups. In fact, Jobs at the time was still the iCEO, the “i” standing for interim.

Still, none of these successes provided Apple and the Mac (and Jobs) much respect.

Microsoft and other companies continued to hire away numbers of Apple programmers and product managers. Apple had a recruiting desk in its booth with a sign above it saying: “Work Different.”

In the same week, Silicon Graphics announced its first lines of Windows NT workstations. The company was caving in to the common wisdom of the market and abandoning its MIPS RISC processor and Irix flavor of Unix, leaving Apple to carry the RISC banner with the PowerPC and looking more out of place with its Unix-based Mac OS X.

Jobs must have had some of this, or all of this, on his mind on his birthday in 1999. What a difference a decade can make.

Be ready for new and improved applets in Windows 7

Has Internet Explorer 8 been released? No.

The validity of stories can never be 100% unless you get the word directly from the horses mouth. In such a case of the release to manufacturing of Internet Explorer 8, the next generation browser from Microsoft, I’m not so sure it has been released.

If it has been released, why hasn’t Microsoft said so? Normally they announce things the minute the final build has rolled off the metaphorical tongue of the servers.

With Windows 7 still in the process of development and marketing campaigns, surely the IE8 release for XP, Vista and Windows Server will be older than the one in the final released Windows 7?

The EU have spat the dummy out in regards to the antitrust issues with Internet Explorer, so surely this will screw things up in both releases.

The recent release candidate version of the software doesn’t work on Windows 7, making me think a special semi-integrated version will be rolled out for the next version of Windows. If this is the case, you can hardly call any build at the moment which is incompatible with Windows 7 as a “final” product.

The announcement of a new reliability update for Windows 7’s in-built version of IE8 also caught my attention. If they’re still releasing updates for a finished product, the product isn’t finished. The time stamp on this post on the IEBlog suggests updates are still being rolled out for the beta product, and that the final release will probably still be on course for next month.

Windows 7: Beta testers, not Microsoft, need more feedback

When I asked last week what Windows 7 testers wanted, the predominant answer was more information — specifically more information about which bugs were being fixed (and not) as the product progressed through the pipeline.

When I saw Windows 7 chief Steven Sinofsky had published another (epic-length) post, entitled “Feedback and Engineering Windows 7, I was encouraged. Until I read the post, that is.

If you want more information on how Microsoft obtains feedback and debates that feedback internally, this Februrary 25 entry is your post. If you were hoping for more about how and when the team was going to relay that feedback to its testers, you won’t be happy.

Some interesting factoids from the post:

During the first few week of the Windows 7 beta, more than 1 million people downloaded and installed it.
Microsoft has released a “reliability update” test release for Windows 7 testers with Internet Explorer 8. (My blogging colleague Zack Whittaker has more thoughts on that IE 8 update.)
“During a peak week in January we (the Windows dev team) were receiving one Send Feedback report every 15 seconds for an entire week, and to date we’ve received well over 500,000 of these reports.”
Microsoft has “fixes in the pipeline for nearly 2,000 bugs in Windows code (not in third party drivers or applications) that caused crashes or hangs.”

That’s great. Microsoft is getting a lot of feedback about Windows 7. What kind of feedback are testers getting from the team in return? Very little. I get lots of e-mail from testers asking me whether Microsoft has fixed specific bugs that have been reported on various comment boards and Web sites. I have no idea, and neither do they.

The feedback loop cannot continue indefinitely. But would finding some way to relay to testers which bugs have been fixed and which haven’t derail the development process?

Sinofsky doesn’t address that issue specifically in the post. He repeats the new Microsoft mantra — “Shipping is a feature.” Specifically, in his words:

“(U)ltimately on the Windows development team we have to make a call as we’re seeing a lot of people are looking forward to us finishing Windows 7, which means we need to stop changing the product and ship it.”

That’s definitely true, but don’t the testers spending hours, days and weeks providing you with feedback deserve more information back from Microsoft? Any thoughts about how Microsoft might provide more and better tester feedback with the least amount of time/effort?

Update: Speaking of Windows 7, Microsoft rolled out an update to Windows 7 yesterday. This wasn’t one of the “placeholder” updates that it is delivering this week just for test purposes. The February 24 update was “an app compat refresh for Window 7 and is focused on older PC games,” according to a company spokesperson.

William (Bill) H. Gates is chairman of Microsoft Corporation, the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential. Microsoft had revenues of US$51.12 billion for the fiscal year ending June 2007, and employs more than 78,000 people in 105 countries and regions.

On June 15, 2006, Microsoft announced that effective July 2008 Gates will transition out of a day-to-day role in the company to spend more time on his global health and education work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. After July 2008 Gates will continue to serve as Microsoft’s chairman and an advisor on key development projects. The two-year transition process is to ensure that there is a smooth and orderly transfer of Gates’ daily responsibilities. Effective June 2006, Ray Ozzie has assumed Gates’ previous title as chief software architect and is working side by side with Gates on all technical architecture and product oversight responsibilities at Microsoft. Craig Mundie has assumed the new title of chief research and strategy officer at Microsoft and is working closely with Gates to assume his responsibility for the company’s research and incubation efforts.

Born on Oct. 28, 1955, Gates grew up in Seattle with his two sisters. Their father, William H. Gates II, is a Seattle attorney. Their late mother, Mary Gates, was a schoolteacher, University of Washington regent, and chairwoman of United Way International.

Gates attended public elementary school and the private Lakeside School. There, he discovered his interest in software and began programming computers at age 13.

In 1973, Gates entered Harvard University as a freshman, where he lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer, now Microsoft's chief executive officer. While at Harvard, Gates developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer - the MITS Altair.

With the exception of Apple’s AirPort Express, we have yet to see the 802.11n WiFi standard implemented into mobile devices and here comes a new standard that has recently been approved by the IEEE. WiFi 802.11r is the latest wireless standard to join the like of 802.11a/b/g and n and it looks pretty promising as it’s expected to provide less than 50ms of downtime when switching from one access point to another. That makes it a pretty ideal wireless solution for mobile devices that used for VoIP as it will ensure zero dropped calls on it as a result of downtime.

So, what will happen now to 802.11n with the approval of 802.11r? Well, we could still expect a number of products that support the standard to come out as it does take time for manufacturers to fully implement new technology into their products. However, I do hope that 802.11r support will be available already as early as 2009 primarily because of its superior features over the 802.11n standard. This is one technology we should all watch out.

Samsung X360 To Compete With Macbook Air

Samsung has just launched another laptop as a contender in the lightweight arena. Samsung X360 weighs at only 2.8-pounds and 0.66-inches thick, seems to want to compete directly with Macbook Air. X360 features Intel Centrino 2 Processor, 128 GB Solid State Drive (SSD), up to 4 GB RAM, built-in HDMI connection, a 34mm express card slot and VGA output. It also comes with integrated 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, 802.11a/b/g/n wireless connectivity. Samsung claims the laptop can stay up for 10 hours after a single recharge. It will hit shelves around September, costing approximately between $2200 and $3000.

It not only provides you with a sleek and stylish wireless speaker system, it’s also an iPod dock which is a first for the company. The standard package comes with the dock that also features a built-in FM/AM tuner and two wireless speakers that can receive signals up to 164-feet away. It’ll cost around $400 when it lands in stores next month in the US. It’s definitely more expensive than the EOS wireless system, but this one’s got tons of sex appeal written all over it. Additional speakers will cost $130 a piece (the same with the EOS).

No word though whether it will become locally available or not, but I’m pretty optimistic it will.

Born 1955 Los Altos CA; Evangelic bad boy who, with Steve Wozniak, co-founded Apple Computer Corporation and became a multimillionaire before the age of 30. Subsequently started the NeXT Corporation to provide an educational system at a reasonable price, but found that software was a better seller than hardware.

Educ: Ungraduated, Physics, literature, and poetry, Reed College, OR; Prof. Exp: Atari Corporation; Apple Corporation; NeXT Corporation.

Going to work for Atari after leaving Reed College, Jobs renewed his friendship with Steve Wozniak. The two designed computer games for Atari and a telephone "blue box", getting much of their impetus from the Homebrew Computer Club. Beginning work in the Job's family garage they managed to make their first "killing" when the Byte Shop in Mountain View bought their first fifty fully assembled computers. On this basis the Apple Corporation was founded, the name based on Job's favorite fruit and the logo (initially used as the unregistered logo of the ACM APL Conference in San Francisco) chosen to play on both the company name and the word byte. Through the early 1980's Jobs controlled the business side of the corporation, successively hiring presidents who would take the organization to a higher level. With the layoffs of 1985 Jobs lost a power struggle with John Sculley, and after a short hiatus reappeared with new funding to create the NeXT corporation.

MANILA, Philippines -- A Davao City councilor has urged constituents to help the council decide on how best to receive an unreleased internal revenue allotment (IRA) in an online poll he posted recently in his blog.
Peter Lavina, a public official who has been blogging for years, said that the city's council is currently debating on how to get the P142 million in IRA due to the reenacted budget in 2001 and 2003.
"Its City council is currently debating on how best to receive the amount with the national government offering three options," Lavina told INQUIRER.net in an e-mail message.
Hoping to encourage more public participation in governance, Lavina has for years been blogging about his city council and his job to promote participatory governance. He said the Davao city council will decide on the issue of the unreleased internal revenue allotment on July 1.
"I presided in the debates of the City Council on how best to get this sum. The national government is offering us two ways: Option 1 is to get this money by seven installments starting May 2009 to May 2015. Option 2 is to get the P142 million now at a discounted rate of just 70 percent," he wrote in his blog.
But during the discussion, he said the city council has looked at another option: Borrow money from Land Bank against this unreleased IRA share. That way, we get the whole amount and pay the interests from our regular IRA," he said.
"For lack of time, we decided to postpone the decision until the July 1 Regular Session. But, offhand, many of our colleagues are favoring the third option," he pointed out.
Lavina is one of few public officials actively blogging in the country.

Acknowledging the dominance of rival HP in the local market, Samsung Philippines hopes to make a dent as it markets printer products that are 30 to 40 percent cheaper than the top brand, according to Cathy Pacia, newly appointed general manager of the information technology team in Samsung Philippines, in an interview.

Pacia said Samsung will continue pushing its laser printers both in the consumer and corporate segments.The Philippines, she added, remains a very price-sensitive market.
Considering the increasing oil prices and inflation, the Samsung executive said that the company is focused on offering attractive prices for its printer products.

Using the analogy of soda drinks versus non-soda drinks, Pacia said Samsung printers are going to be marketed as a strong alternative to rival HP.
Since Samsung manufactures its own printers, prices will also be "localized," giving the company an advantage in terms of providing flexible cost packages for printer products, she added.

Let the economic pundits argue whether or not we're in a recession.

Either way, consumers are cutting back on spending.

Along with this comes a desire to save money as well. But how? If you have a few hours to spare you can find ways to put $100 or more back into your pocket.

The money may not show up instantly, but the time and effort to create the savings is minimal. By year's end you will have saved a nice chunk of change. In some cases, your savings will keep piling up well after that.

Here are eight actions to add $100 or more to your savings:

1. Wash With Cold Water

Many people don't realize that the major cost of running a washing machine is the electricity it takes to heat the water. This accounts for 85% to 90% of the energy used.

2. Drink More Water

Many people have grown accustomed to having some type of flavor in their drinks -- whether that be soda, fruit juice, an energy drink or something similar.

While only drinking water (of the nonbottled variety) would be the ideal way to save the most money, there is about as much chance of that happening as you never eating another snack.

3. Compare Prices

Airport X-ray friendly laptop bags in the works

Taking your laptop out of the case when going through airport security may soon be a thing of the past. The Transportation Security Administration is introducing a new policy that would allow passengers to keep their laptops inside "checkpoint-friendly" cases when going through airport security, according to USA Today.

Details of what makes a case "checkpoint-friendly" haven't been disclosed to the public yet, but do expect a full TSA publicity campaign in the future with all of those details. What we do know is that guidelines given to manufacturers call for a case that provides them with a clear image of the laptop in the bin when it goes through an X-ray machine. This means the bag is likely to have little or no padding, no extra pockets for cords, and no straps to get in the way.

Hopefully this means those of you that have laptop sleeves with handles will be ok, but we'll have to wait for the guidelines. Targus and Scooba Design are currently working on a few prototypes, and if all goes well, these special cases will be available for sale by the holiday season.

Banning personal web use actually costs billions

You read that right: A new study is claiming that by banning personal Internet use in the office (including video games, social networking, dating, shopping, personal email, or other non-work-related activities), British businesses are losing 4 billion pounds every year due to decreased productivity.

The report, based on "psychometric trials" carried out by a doctor at Goldsmiths University, says that "e-breaks" don't distract employees from their work but rather help them reduce stress while sharpening and focusing their minds for another round of work.

The survey, which asked 1,700 employees about their break activities, found that companies had comparably little resistance to their employees taking cigarette and coffee/tea breaks, but that "wasting" time on the Internet was considerably more frowned upon.

The bottom line, says study mastermind Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic: "The report proves that a ten minute e-break a day can have significant benefits but, despite this, many bosses are banning them in the fear that they distract employees. By factoring in a dedicated slot for an e-break bosses are fostering a more trusting working environment, boosting productivity and ultimately increasing their profit which surely makes good business sense."

Sounds good to me. On the other hand, the study was commissioned by PopCap, a maker of just the casual games (including Bejeweled and other titles) that the study covers, so take the findings as you feel appropriate.

How to beat spyware and viruses, 2008 edition

The last time I wrote a piece on how to remove spyware from your computer was in 2006. Time for an update, I think. Here's my perennial "How to Beat Spyware" howto, revised and updated for 2008 (and combined into a single file instead of two parts).

Here's what to do if you suspect an infection on your Windows PC. (Please note these steps apply to both Windows XP and Vista.)

1) Are you sure it's spyware or a virus? Windows pop-ups and alerts can often seem invasive enough to be viruses, especially with Vista. Try searching the web for the exact text you see on the screen to make sure you aren't dealing with an aggressive Windows message. (Many of these can be turned off, so try whatever instructions you find.) On the other hand, some viruses masquerade as Windows alerts, so tread lightly.

2) Boot in safe mode. If you have a virus, first step is to try booting in safe mode. You can get to safe mode (a simplified version of Windows that disables a lot of extra gunk, possibly including some spyware apps) by restarting your PC and tapping F8 during boot. Soon you'll get a menu of options. Select "Safe Mode" (it's at the top of the menu) and wait for the machine to fully boot. The system will look funny (with a black background and larger icons, probably), but don't worry about it. This is only temporary. (Also note that many spyware applications can disable safe mode, so if you find this doesn't work, just boot normally.)

3) Run your antivirus application. This is of course assuming you have an antivirus application. (Need one? Check here.) You're in safe mode now, so run a full scan of your PC at maximum security levels (include the option to scan within compressed files, for example). This will probably take an hour or more, so be patient. Fix any problems the virus scan turns up. Then reboot into safe mode again using the procedure in step 2.

4) Run one or two anti-spyware applications. I used to recommend running multiple anti-spyware apps, but virtually all antivirus apps now do a pretty good job at getting rid of spyware too, so you don't need an army of additional applications just for spyware. Also, I now recommend starting with AdAware (which is free) and moving on to Spyware Doctor (free as part of the Google Pack) if you feel you need additional help. (Please note that recent versions of Spyware Doctor and Norton Antivirus have some trouble with each other.) You can try other apps too, but the once-recommended SpyBot Search & Destroy is no longer very effective, sadly. (Neither is Microsoft's own Windows Defender.) Of course, fix anything and everything these apps find.

5) Reboot normally. (Not in safe mode.) Now take stock. Still got spyware? It's time to move along to my more advanced techniques for removing the nasties.

6) Run HijackThis. HijackThis is a free software tool that scans your computer to find malware that other apps might miss. Scroll down to "Official downloads" to download the tool. Next, simply open the ZIP file you downloaded, extract the application, and run the tool (you don't need to install it). Click the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button. You'll receive a large text file as well as a dialog box which gives you a list of active software processes, which you can then choose to delete. Unfortunately, this list includes both helpful and unhelpful software, so don't just start deleting items. Continue in step 7 to figure out how to fix your spyware infection.

7) Post your log file online. Visit this page, which offers a list of forums staffed by volunteers who can help you interpret your HijackThis log. The SWI Forums are especially busy, but most of the forums on the list are equally apt. Go to SWI and visit the "Malware Removal" forum which has over 50,000 topics listed: Those are all people like you who are seeking help getting rid of spyware. Register for an account, read the FAQ, then visit that Malware Removal forum, and post a new topic. Paste the content of the text file you created in step 5 into this topic and (politely) ask for help. You will get a response from a volunteer helper, typically within 3 days. You'll be given specific advice on what entries to remove with the HijackThis tool, and you might be pointed to additional software to run to help remove common spyware infections. Follow all the instructions and keep working with the forum helpers until either you or they give up. (And no, don't send your log file to me or post it here. I am not nearly the spyware removal expert that these guys are.)

7a) Alternately: Paste your log file into an automated tool. Don't have three days? Try simply pasting your HijackThis log file into this form. It does a pretty good job at auto-analyzing what's wrong with your machine, with no waiting. As well, if that doesn't work, you can search for the items you find in the HijackThis log by name to see what they are and how to remove them, if they're spyware. This can be quite time consuming, though.

8) Try System Restore. If that doesn't work, you might try running Windows System Restore to roll back your OS to a time before the infection happened. This isn't foolproof: You might not have System Restore turned on, or the spyware might have shut System Restore off, as well. But it's worth a shot. With either XP or Vista, System Restore can be found under Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

9) Give up and wipe your hard drive. At this point, you've exhausted all the options I know of. You might try again at steps 6/7 to make sure you've done everything you can to salvage the PC. Forum helpers will often work with you for weeks to help fight a spyware infection, but there are tens of thousands of possible variants out there, with new ones cropping up every day. It's just not possible to clean them all, every time. Sometimes the only thing you can do is call it quits, reformat your hard drive, and reinstall your OS. Again, make sure you have your backups ready and verified. Once you're up and running, reinstall your antivirus and anti-spyware applications, and stay vigilant against infection. Good luck.
